Why All Eyes Were on San Diego and Why It Matters

San Diego has been on display over the last week or so.

No, not because of the gigantic travel nightmare at San Diego International, as much as that did draw attention being one of the hardest hit airports in the country.

But because of San Diego’s weather first and then because of what turned out to be yet another down-to-the finish and unprecedented spectacle of a Holiday Bowl game played on a baseball diamond turned into a football field.

Millions from around the country saw video on TV and across social media of our sunny and warm Christmas weekend while those millions were frozen out and snowed in.

Then just when rain threatened to put a damper on the first college bowl game ever played at Petco Park and the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl parade, the rain stopped, and the sun shined.

And anyone from anywhere watching the parade or watching the game, saw San Diego Bay in all its splendor, as the water glistened, the downtown skyline simmered, and the amazing sunset painted the sky for all to witness. And we also saw the big boost in the local tourist economy.

As KOGO’s Lou Penrose put it Wednesday evening, we all saw what makes San Diego what it is and why we still call it America’s Finest City.

And while true, we also know that our great city still has big problems to deal with and solve. The biggest among them, the homelessness that has gotten worse.

And as we go into the new year in a few days, may San Diego draw attention for being a city that has made things much better.
