Why It's a Critical Time for Football

On a night that ended a weekend of football games, what happened on the field during Monday night’s NFL game put a sudden and sobering hold on the entire sports world.

Injuries happen in college and professional football all the time but when a player falls to the turf, passes out and is getting CPR as other players drop to their knees and fans in the stands go silent, it gets everyone’s attention.

There have been some very serious injuries in football over the decades, including some that permanently paralyzed some players.

And every year some players suffer concussions, and it’s become common enough over the years that there are concussion protocols in college and professional football. One of the most recent concussion incidents, just a few weeks ago in the NFL, sparked renewed debate about what more needs to be done about them.

And that debate always includes the concerns over the long-term effects of head injuries in football.

Any fan of the San Diego Chargers over the years will always remember what happened to Junior Seau, whose brain injuries during his career led to a tragic end when he took his own life.

Will the Monday Night football incident that led to the suspension of the game and a line-up of doctors on TV talking about injuries in the sport…lead to even bigger and more dramatic changes in the sport?

And will more parents decide that football is not the sport they want their kid to play and pursue?
