What Americans Say Abut the Age of Politicians

A growing question about politics is "Are our politicians too old?"

With the current president 80 years old and the previous president 76 years old who would be a president of 80 years old if he were to win a second term, age is and will be a factor in the 2024 presidential campaign.

The average of age of U.S. Senators is 64 and the average of age in the House of Representatives is 58.

But a recent study of House members done after the 2020 election showed that even though there were a few younger candidates who ran, the average age of candidates who won that year was 52 years old with just over 10 percent of all the candidates 35 or younger.

While the study said that older candidates, because of their experience in politics and their ability to raise funds, win more than younger candidates, a couple of recent polls suggest that voters want younger people in office.

In a poll last September, 47 percent responded that politics would improve if there were more younger people in politics. Another survey found that 9 out of 10 Americans feel that 75 should be the maximum age for serving as President.

Something to think about for voters and for anyone thinking of or deciding to run for office in the next election, young and old.
