Having been someone who has covered breaking news for decades, and has reported on the many school shootings over those many years, you learn to keep your emotions under control so you can tell listeners and viewers what they need to know about what happened.
Every school shooting can be difficult for reporters to report. But this latest school shooting, at a Christian elementary school next to a Presbyterian church in a quiet area of Nashville Tennessee has sparked something inside the hearts and minds of news people and probably most people in our country.
During live coverage of the shooting Monday, where three nine year olds and three adults were killed, Fox News channel anchor John Roberts said he and his colleagues are growing weary of covering the growing number of school shootings in America. As he put it, “We are tired of this. We’re very tired of reporting on school shootings week in and week out.”
Sadly, school shootings have been going on for a long time and have happened everywhere including here in San Diego. According to a report from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, since 1970, there have been about 40 school shootings every year.
The sadly familiar scenes from Nashville have prompted heart wrenching comments today. And the common question you see today on social media and among those in the news media is “What will it take for these school shootings to end?”
Only God knows. And we can only hope we find the answer to the unending horror of school shootings.
