What a Survey Says About Parents and Their Kids

Many Americans this week may be thinking more about their families. Because that what happens after a shooting tragedy like the one Monday in Nashville where children are the victims.

And with that still on the minds of lots of parents, a new survey is out this week that found that a typical family spends just six hours together a week.

The survey of about 2,000 parents with children at home found that 56 -percent agree that their work shifts are hurting family quality time. Nearly 30 percent say homework, 29 percent blame household chores 21 percent say TV, 20 percent say the use of social media and 19 percent say after-school activities. The researchers say they that half of these parents with kids say there are too many distractions in the home, specifically pointing to devices with screens.

Lots of surveys have found that eating meals together at home every day is not the norm that it once was many years ago, but experts still say that eating meals together as a family has positive effects on everyone. About 25 percent of the parents in this survey say they would like to eat more family meals together to encourage conversation but more than 40-pecent of these parents say they struggle with what to talk about with their kids.

After what happened in Nashville this week, maybe a survey like this will put a special desire in the hearts of all parents about the time they spend with their kids.
