Why What Should Be Possible is So Impossible

It’s not easy to come together on controversial issues.

And in recent times, it seems as if it almost never happens. Just take the last few days.

The San Diego City Council votes in favor of new protections for renters, but not without opposition from both sides. As the Union Tribune puts it this morning: “Many tenant advocates argued the proposed law didn’t go far enough while mom and pop landlords complaint it is too much.”

In Sacramento Tuesday, a state senate committee was urged by San Diego’s mayor and family members who have lost loved ones to approve a measure that would toughen penalties for selling the dangerous drug fentanyl, saying it would save lives. But lawmakers said it wouldn’t.

In Washington, D.C. the two parties are unable at the moment, as usual, to agree on almost anything, from what to do about the debt limit to what to do about the border.

There always appears to be so little hope that issues like these and others will ever see any agreement on anything.

So why is it so hard to come together on so much?

Those on each side of the issues are dug in and won’t budge. Principles are important. But when each side’s right is the other side’s wrong, without compromise, nothing happens.

Working together usually works a lot better than fighting with each other.
