What to Do as the War in Ukraine Continues

The war in Ukraine is going on some eight thousand miles away and it has been going on now for 14 months since the Russian invasion began in late February of last year.

And there are no signs the war is anywhere near an end. In fact it is looking like it could last another year or even longer.

Just today, at least 19 people including children were killed in a wave of Russian missile strikes that are described by the BBC as the worst in two months. The Ukrainian government says the Russian missiles blew up an apartment block in one city and there were attacks in the capital city of Kyiv as well. The Russian government put out a statement claiming they were targeting Ukraine’s army reserve units.

Ukraine president Zelensky says these latest air strikes show that more international action is needed to defeat Russia. The United States and the other NATO countries have sent together billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid.

The U.S. has sent the most and more will be sent, with the promise from the Biden administration and many in Congress to help Ukraine as long as it takes to stop what is called by those in Ukraine and elsewhere as Putin’s war. Polls continue to show support for continued U.S. military aid among the American people though there are those in Congress who suggest the war in Ukraine is not ours to pay for.

With the next presidential election just 18 months away and the campaign already underway, what to do in and for Ukraine will only grow as an issue. As it does, more people, including children, will die in Ukraine. And as the most powerful country in the world, others around the world are looking to us.
