A Big Day for Freedom and What It Means for Ukraine

Today’s 79th anniversary of D-Day comes at a time when  Europe and the United States are involved in the war in Ukraine, which has been called the greatest threat of another world war since World War II.

On June 6th of 1944, the airborne assault and amphibius landings on the shores of France began and the liberation of Europe from Hitler and Nazi forces got underway.

During the first 24 hours, at least 18,000 paratroopers, some 7,000 ships and 160,000 men were involved in what has been described as one of human civilization’s most monumental days.

During that first 24-hour day of the operation to stop Hitler, more than 4,000 allied troops were killed…including more than 2500 Americans. And many thousands more would die before World War II ended in 1945.

Now here in 2023, it appears Vladimir Putin’s Russian invasion of Ukraine, that began almost a year and a half ago is about the enter a new and possibly more deadly phase, with Ukrainian forces launching what could be a massive offensive assault to take back their country.

The U.S and its allies that are supplying billions of dollars in weapons to Ukraine have been concerned since the start of the Russian invasion that it could lead to Putin trying to take over more nations that used to be part of the failed Soviet Union.

The war in Ukraine is another battle against evil. And for the thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who are fighting against it, the history of D-Day is probably on their minds today.
