Questions After Mass Shooting Taints Denver NBA Championship

The news out of Denver this morning is not the kind of news people there want to hear the morning after the first NBA championship for the city.

The news this morning there was supposed to be all about the victory and the celebration for Denver Nugget fans and the whole city.

Instead the news from Denver is all about the mass shooting during the celebration.

At least 10 people including the shooter, who is in custody, were wounded, with three victims in critical condition and others with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police in Denver call it a complex investigation into an altercation among several individuals. So we don’t know yet about why and how it happened.

But we know that what happened in Denver last night was the latest of at least 290 mass shootings in the United States so far this year in which four or more people have been shot not including the shooter.

So all the excitement in Denver after the buzzer sounded last night on the basketball court, is now overshadowed by the sounds of the gunfire last night out on a city street.

And the victims, their families and the citizens of Denver are doing what so many other people do when there is a mass shooting in their community. They are stunned but not shocked. They are hurting and they are angry.

Sadly, mass shootings are no longer unusual. But we can hope that one day, we will be able to celebrate a victory in the battle against these kinds of gun violence.
