Comic-Con 2023 is now history.
The big stars from TV and film may not have been there this year because of the actors and writers being on strike, but San Diego’s annual mega-convention was a mega success if you talk to those who attended and the hotels, restaurants and shops that all did a lot of business over the last week.
A lot of the attendees who have been coming to Comic-Con for a long time, including some of those who flew here from other parts of the country, are saying it was one of the best Comic-Cons ever despite not having Hall H filled with top Hollywood stars. Instead of waiting in those long lines there was time to see more and do more.
And there was plenty to do outside the convention center all over the Gaslamp for people who didn’t have Comic-Con badges. That includes all the people watching with cosplay described this year as above average, even with the Barbie pink.
So San Diego’s important tourism economy got a big a boost this past week at a time when it is still recovering from the impact from the pandemic.
From a security standpoint, there were no major incidents reported by convention officials or police. And even the weather cooperated with the hottest of the heat wave staying east of the 15 freeway.
After all we went through during the three years of the pandemic, Comic-Con this year was a slam bang success. Onward and upward to 2024.
