True crime has been a popular genre for books, movies and lots of TV shows for many decades.
Starting with true crime detective magazines in the 50s, to tabloids in the 60s, books and films in the 70s and 80s, to TV and cable in the 90s to streaming shows now, true crime has always been popular.
Why is it so fascinating to so many people? Reading and watching true crime stories are all about bad and/or evil and/or sick people doing things that are hard to understand.
And about the tragic victims of these acts of evil and about how true crime cases are solved and the stories of justice for those who carry out these evil acts.
But it can sometimes be difficult to believe that true crimes can be true because many of the crimes are so horrid, how could any human being do these things?
That was the feeling for those who witnessed, read or saw the trial of a 50 year old mother named Lori Vallow Daybell who was sentenced this week to prison for the rest of her life on earth for brutally murdering two of her children…who was motivated by scary religious beliefs about "dark energy" and the "end times," and desire to pursue a life with a man that included conspiring to kill his now-deceased wife.
The judge said that while police, prosecutors, jurors and he himself would be haunted by images of the children's bodies forever, he saw no sign that she felt any remorse.
Evil has been around forever but when justice is done, it can give us hope that good can overcome it.
