We see the reports or hear about it all the time it seems. People who live in California or who want to decide to move somewhere else because of the high cost of housing.
Home prices here are a lot more than they are in a lot of other states. San Diego has among the highest.
And we see evidence of the impact of high housing prices when we see the growing number of people who are homeless.
Experts say one of the major reasons for the high price of housing is that there is not enough of it being built. When demand is higher than supply prices go up.
But can more housing mean too much of the wrong kind of housing? That’s the question that was debated for hours this week by the city of San Diego’s Planning Commission and has prompted protests by lots of homeowners.
For now, the SB 10 plan, based on a new state law, that could mean that homes on single size lots in many areas of the city could be torn down and replaced by buildings up to three stories high and with up to ten units is on hold.
The idea of course is to create more housing and make it easier for the city to increase supply and keep prices lower and keep people here, attract new residents and even help reduce homelessness.
But with the opposition to it in many areas of the city it may turn out to be a case of not in my backyard…and maybe not in anyone’s backyard.
