What Younger Generations Say About Having Children

You may remember the Zero Population movement…a campaign years ago to reduce the world’s population because of fears over global resources such as food and energy.

Now all these years later, over population doesn’t seem to be a big concern.

In fact, a new study says the trend of having fewer children is growing. This study found that only half of Gen Z and Millennials plan to start a family.

The researchers surveyed about one thousand people between 18 and 34 who haven’t yet started a family, and they found that 25 percent of them have already decided against ever having a baby.

The survey found that only 55 percent said they plan to have children in the future and 20 percent are unsure.

The most common reason? Their desire to focus more on themselves followed by financial issues, worries about the state of the world and impacts on the environment.

The study found that only about half of all those surveyed believe that having children is important for personal fulfillment.

Among those who wish to have children, 76 percent say they want the joy and love that comes with raising a child or say they want to fulfill a sense of purpose, with some saying they’re looking to children as a source of support and companionship in their old age.

So while not as many couples may be deciding to have children, those who do have children know that while it’s certainly not easy to raise a child, kids remain the greatest of blessings.
