Remembering the Things We Miss

There are memory posts that appear on Facebook and there are throwback Thursdays and Vanished (name your city) pages that you can follow.

Let’s face it. Nostalgia is big. Remembering your ‘good ole days’ has always been popular.

This week, with the official word being announced, the era of the once very popular drive-on movie theater is getting closer to being gone forever.

The Santee Drive-in, that first opened in the late 1950s, will be shutting down by January. It once was among a dozen drive in movie theaters in San Diego County. Soon there will be just one, the South Bay Drive in and Swap Meet.

The owner of the Santee drive told the San Diego Union Tribune, they’ve tried, but “the drive-in theatre is no longer economically viable.”

At one time there were about 5,000 drive in theaters nationwide and while the 300 or so that still were operating in 2020, with some seeing an increase in carloads of movie goers during the pandemic lockdowns, it looks more and more like the drive in movie theater will soon be like the typewriter.

We all know things are always changing. But there are some things,, no matter what our age, that we wish were still around. Those special things and special times that we like to remember.

And remind us of the gift that memories can be.
