Will the Migrant Drop Offs in San Diego Lead to Change?

You’ve been hearing all the reports. Border Patrol buses dropping off migrants at San Diego trolley centers.

That’s because the number of people showing up seeking asylum is way up again and the federal government doesn’t have enough facilities or resources to handle all the people being held in Border Patrol stations.

A statement from Customs and Border Protection says agents are trying “to quickly decompress the areas along the border and safely and efficiently screen and process migrants to place them in immigration enforcement proceedings consistent with our laws.”

Migrants usually will get short-term help, including food and hotel rooms, from shelters funded by the federal government and in some cases the state with staff helping to arrange transportation for them to join friends or family in other cities as they wait for immigration processing. But those shelters are now running out of room.

Some local leaders like Supervisor Jim Desmond call it a failure of our immigration system and blame not only President Biden but also previous presidents of both parties.

The mess at the border right now is yet another sign that one of the most volatile, dangerous and complicated situations needs to finally and urgently be addressed by those in the White House and the Congress. It is way beyond long overdue.
