The Battle Over San Diego's Road Map for the Future

Battle lines over what to do about the future of transportation in San Diego County were drawn a few years ago and now the battle has become a war.

You’re hearing this morning from some of the cries from those involved in this conflict that involves all the leaders from all across the county.

At today’s meeting of the San Diego Association of Governments, some of the mayors on the SANDAG board are calling for the removal of the long-disputed Regional Road User Charger, commonly referred to as the Mileage Tax, as part of the long term transportation plan for the county.

That plan is a big one and an important one and will mean what it’s going to be like in the years and decades ahead when it comes to traffic congestion and how we get around, or how we transport ourselves, from here to there and back to here. And how much it is going to cost and where the money for it will come from,

The plan is one that was birthed by the now outgoing Executive Director of SANDAG, who is resigning at the end of this year.

But the plan could live on long after he is gone. And that’s why the battle among all the local elected leaders is such a fierce one.

How it ends up will determine the road map of the future and how we get there.
