What to Do About All the Hate

Today’s news about a 71-year-old man in Illinois stabbing to death a six year old boy and seriously wounding his mother is the latest act of hate that makes the news.

According to the reports, the man’s relatives said he attacked the woman and her son because of their Muslim faith and as a response to the attack by Hamas on Israel.

Here in San Diego police are investigating what they call a possible hate crime after the imam at the Islamic Center said worshipers werefeeling threatened after finding some of the posters of Israelis who are missing that are being circulated around the city to draw attention to the victims.

Also this weekend, the association of police chiefs at their convention in San Diego heard from the director of the FBI who talked about domestic terror threats in the U.S.

As Christopher Wray put it  “There’s no question we’re seeing an increase in reported threats, and we’ve got to be on the lookout, especially for lone actors who may take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own.”

And all you have these days is to turn on the cable news channels or scroll the internet to see the heart-breaking images of the horrendous acts of hate carried out against Jewish people who were attacked in their homes.

Sadly hate is not new. There have been acts of hate since Cain killed his brother Able. But as much as we may hope that things change, it does appear to be getting worse.
