When a president of the United States delivers an address from the Oval Office sitting at what’s called the Resolute Desk, it is always a big deal.
As one Republican commentator points out, when presidents speak from behind that desk with the American flag behind them, the whole world is watching. So President Biden’s speech to the nation, it was delivered to the world.
Steve Schmidt noted that President Biden’s speech sounded similar to an address on the radio in 1940 by then President Franklin Roosevelt and Biden even quoted a line from that speech decades ago, when he said Thursday night, that “we must be the great arsenal of democracy.”
President Roosevelt was calling for Americans to commit to fighting the evil forces that were the Nazis.
Last night, President Biden was calling on Americans and Congress to commit to doing what is necessary short of a world war, to stop the evil forces from the leader of Russia and from Middle East terrorists.
What’s happening in the world right now is hard for us to watch and even to think about at times. Innocent civilians being killed in Israel and in Gaza and in Ukraine.
But while it may not be what we would want, what the role of the United States of America in the world will be is being decided.
