How to Solve San Diego's Homeless Problem

The newest place in San Diego where people who are homeless can go for shelter has taken in about 20 people in its first couple of days or so 6of being open.

Located in what is called Lot O next to Balboa Park, the site includes 17 tents with cots along with bathroom services but city officials say the lot can fit up to 400 tents.

Mayor Todd Gloria said at the opening last weekend that “We’re moving a step closer to where Sam Diegans want us to be.”

And now with the city’s new homeless camping ban being enforced, with cops giving out warnings and tickets, there is optimism that the homeless problem will become less of a problem.

But there are plenty of critics who say that we are still a long ways off of getting close to solving the homeless problem in San Diego, with a trend of more people becoming homeless than finding housing.

The high price of housing and the high cost of living in San Diego are not going to make it easy to ever fully solve the problem of homelessness.

But with it being an economic problem, a humanitarian problem and also a political problem, it will take government, the private sector and the community at large all doing their part if we are ever able to come close to solving it.
