A Personal Story and Reminder About Distracted Driving

A recent report from the National Safety Council says cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.  And there are close to 400,000 injuries each year from accidents caused by texting while driving.

Probably not a surprise to anyone listening right now, but when you’re in an accident involving a driver who is suspected of being distracted, it hits home.

In this case, what got hit was the vehicle that I was driving. The first car slamming into the rear of a second car and then that car hitting the one that I was driving. Fortunately, no serious injuries.  None at all for me and only minor damage to the rear bumper.

But what happened happens a lot, and there are a lot of close calls that happen, too.

That’s why there’s the law that there is about using a phone while behind the wheel. And that’s why cops give out tickets to drivers who they catch using their phone in the car, with some of course not appreciating it much at the time.

But an accident or a ticket or a report on the aforementioned accident this weekend, all can serve as helpful reminders for all of us about the dangers of distracted driving.
