Why the Weather is Costing Us More

Just as we prepare for the rain here in Southern California over the next few days, comes a new report about the weather.

The report is from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It says that the frequency of  billion dollar weather-related disasters in the United States is rising, significantly.

This report says there was an average of one every four months back in the 1980s. Now there is an average of one billion dollar weather disaster every three weeks.

And these weather experts did make the adjustment for inflation over the last 40 years to make it a fair comparison.

In the first eight months of this year, there were 25 separate billion dollar weather related disaster events. That’s up from 22 events in 2022.

These billion dollar weather related events in 2023 include 19 severe storm events, two flood events, one tropical cyclone, one wildfire event, one winter storm cold wave and one summer drought and heat wave.

While the report does say climate change is increasing the frequency of these billion dollar major weather events, it does say the rising costs are also due to factors related to the vulnerability of some of the communities where they occur related to such things as less insurance coverage.

So like everything else it seems like these days, from gas prices to housing, even the weather is costing us more.
