The latest story from the Regional Task Force on Homelessness is the same old story, the story that has been one that has been around for several years now.
The homeless problem continues to be what most would describe as San Diego’s biggest problem.
As Lisa Halverstadt from the Voice of San Diego tells it, the latest report from the task force says that over the last year, about 14-thousand people became homeless for the first time while about 8 thousand of formerly homeless people got into housing.
In other words, the fight against homelessness is one with steps forward that come with steps backward.
The CEO of the Homeless Task Force told the Voice, “Housing and homelessness are directly tied together, and when rental costs go up, so do the numbers of people experiencing homelessness.”
She says long-term success will only come with more homes for people of all income levels. “Every new housing unit matters,” she says.
Of course, really solving the problem of homelessness also involves effectively addressing mental health, substance abuse and human relationship problems.
And that means the homeless problem is a problem that will only be solved if everyone in the community gets involved.
