WATCH: Why They Take the Plunge for the New Year

It drew larger crowds than usual.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, several hundred people showed up to take part in an annual event on January 1st that most in San Diego are not brave or crazy enough to ever want to try.

It was the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge at La Jolla Shores as those several hundred people swam and splashed in the cold ocean water.

Why do these hearty souls do it?  As one woman Polar Bear plunger put it, she wanted to clear her head so she could set goals for the new year. Some of the swimmers say they do it because their family has always done it and it’s a family tradition.

Most only spent maybe a few mins but more likely a few seconds splashing around in the chilly ocean water.

And while it may have cleared their heads and chilled their skin for a very short time, if it does indeed spark some determination to set goals and make New Year’s resolutions they can keep, more power to them.

Experts say having goals for a new year and making a commitment to being better at doing something you want to be better can be a good idea.

But for the vast majority of us in San Diego, jumping into ocean water that’s only 60 degrees is probably not one of them.
