With the high surf returning to the San Diego coastline today, there are growing concerns about the future of the Ocean Beach Pier.
Especially after those historic waves gave it a big battering during the New Year’s holiday weekend.
The reports say it looks like the famous pier won’t be re-opening until this spring, or summer, or fall, or maybe even longer.
It’s been closed since October and was planned to be closed during the winter months due to past damage from storms and surf, but with at least one piling on the south side of the pier and possibly more structural damage from the historic surf last weekend, there are some predictions that it may have to be torn down.
The Ocean Beach Pier Task Force made up of volunteers nominated by local advisory groups and representatives from the City of San Diego, is studying the possibility of completely replacing the pier.
And despite the 2,000 foot OB Pier since 1966 being one of San Diego’s most iconic landmarks, a new and better one would be a good thing. And a safer thing.
It won’t be cheap to do, but it’s something that’s probably worth with its appeal among residents and tourists.
