What to Do About the Bumpy Ride in San Diego

This week’s report card on the condition of city streets is getting lots of attention, as it should.

Why?  Because it shows that more than one-third of the city’s nearly 3,000 mile network of streets is rated either poor, very poor, serious or failed.

City officials say the results of the street survey is a call for action that demands a lot more money spent on road repair.

Of course, few if any in San Diego, are surprised by this failing report card on the condition of city streets.

No matter where you drive in the city, it’s common to drive on streets with potholes, pavement chunks missing and bumps galore.

You can probably name a few off the top of you head. Many of them are main and busy streets such as Hawthorne or Kettner or Miramar Road and many are side streets in neighborhoods.

And you may be among those who may become frustrated and wonder about why some streets in the city that don’t seem as bad as other streets, get repaired first, before the bad ones.

And while city taxpayers don’t want to pay more taxes to fix the streets im San Diego, the money is going to have to be found somewhere or else America’s Finest City could become it’s bumpiest city.
