Steve Garvey may not be able to hit a curve ball any more, but he has been able to throw a curve ball when it comes to politics.
His ascension in the polls the last few weeks, while thanks, certainly in part, to Congressman Adam Schiff ‘s advertising campaign to promote him to avoid having to run against one of the Democrats, Garvey finishing second was not something that many people saw coming, not in the deep blue Golden State.
But then no one back in 1984 expected that then San Diego Padre Steve Garvey would hit a dramatic home run late in game 4 of the best of five National League playoff series against the Cubs to help propel the Padres to the World Series.
He has now done kind of the same thing in the game of politics. He got enough votes, more than probably most thought he would, to propel himself now to the November election. And give Republicans their first chance in 36 years, to have a seat in the U.S. Senate to represent California in 2025.
Just as it was in 1984, virtually no one, outside of San Diego, thought the Padres had a chance to make it the World Series after losing the first two games of the playoffs and everyone seemingly rooting for the much loved Chicago Cubs.
Will Steve Garvey step up to the plate in November and deliver a blow that would stun the political world?
As this former Padre put it in his speech on election night…It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”
