A Long Shot That Could Be Getting Shorter for San Diego Sports Fans

The Padres new season will soon begin as the team heads across the Pacific Ocean this week to play the Dodgers in the first two games of the 2024 season and the first MLB games played in faraway South Korea.

But as baseball begins to move into the headlines, another sport or two are also getting lots of attention in San Diego this week.

That’s because of the news about the city now being willing to consider giving financial assistant to the developers of what’s called the Midway Rising project planned for where our very old and decrepit sports arena is now located.

Because it brings renewed talk about the possibly improved chances of San Diego getting a National Hockey League team.

It’s not going to happen soon, but it will only happen if San Diego has a modern sports arena.

And now with the announcement this week by the NBA’s L-A Clippers, who played at our then not-as-old sports arena in the late 70’s and early 80’s, that their minor league, or G league team, will be playing at the new Frontwave area in Oceanside, and now the dreams of having an NBA team back in San Diego could also become a reality in the years ahead.

In recent years, having hometown NBA or NHL teams in San Diego has been considered a long shot, but local sports fans are keeping their fingers crossed they will one day see three point shots and slap shots at a brand new sports arena.
