The Day the Unexpected Happened in San Diego

What happened in parts of San Diego County was over neighborhood apps and other social media sites like that even before a lot of people even knew about it…even some weather forecasters.

A sudden and unexpected thunderstorm, with heavy rain, thunder and even hail from neighborhoods in the city of San Diego eastward to La Mesa, El Cajon, Santee and elsewhere in the East County.

There was even some unexpected snow falling in the Pine Valley area and nearby.

There were social media posts from those who said things like, “Hey did I miss the memo about a thunderstorm?”

And there were a lot of people texting other people asking the same kind of question or sending  photos of hail in their backyards.

So what happened? The National Weather Service folks admitted to being surprised, with what was supposed to be just a cool and kind of cloudy afternoon turning into rain, thunder and hail.

The meteorologists called it unusual as a weather system that brought some very strong Santa Ana winds to Orange and Riverside Counties showed up in San Diego County with an unexpected thunderstorm for a couple of hours.

By the early evening, the rain was gone, the hail had melted and the streets were dry.

With only the memories left among many people in the county of the day the unexpected happened.
