So the new school year is here with San Diego Unified students heading out with their backpacks and beginning classes.
A special report by the Voice of San Diego published Monday lays out some of the changes that are happening or could happen in the school district this 20-24-2025 school year.
San Diego Unified already changed the date of the first day of school moving it up by one week. Starting a school year earlier appears to be the trend now.
But as the Voice of San Diego report points out, the new school year also begins with the San Diego school district projecting a big budget shortfall this year. The report says they found ways to close the gap, but that doesn’t mean the budget troubles are over.
The school district also has made changes to improve attendance but chronic absenteeism is said to be still much higher than it was before the pandemic.
And then there is the subject of what to do about the use of cellphones at school. Los Angeles Unified just banned cellphones on campus. San Diego Unified could soon do the same.
The first day of school usually means excitement and also some nervousness at times for students, parents and teachers.
And the start of a new school year also reminds us of the importance of learning what kids need to learn to be successful.
