Hoping for an End to a Big Problem in San Diego

A lot of people in the South Bay are probably saying “it’s about time.” But they’re also probably saying, “we will believe it when we see it.”

The news about California’s state legislature unanimously approving a resolution urging President Biden and the Congress to speed up solutions to the Tijuana sewage crisis is certainly welcome news.

For many years. the ocean waters in the South Bay, all the way up to Coronado have been polluted and off limits to swimmers and surfers.

The sponsor of the resolution, State Assembly member David Alvarez calls it what it is, an “urgent environmental and public health crisis that demands immediate action.”

In fact Tuesday marked the 1,000th straight day that beaches in Imperial Beach have been closed due to sewage contamination.

But it’s only a resolution calling on the federal government to actually do something,

Mayors in the South Bay have been complaining and fighting for help for a very long time and there have been promises made and plans made for millions of dollars to be spent to help fix the problem, but the problem instead has not improved.

The citizens group, with the name people remember, Stop the Poop, and environmental groups have sought attention and help for many years.

But you can’t blame them for being doubtful while being hopeful.
