The battle cry began moments after the Padres won their second straight game against the Atlanta Braves to take the first step during the post-season to get to the World Series.
The nearly 50-thousand fans at Petco Park began chanting it loud enough for it probably to be heard in the Gaslamp Quarter as fans began to celebrate what had just happened.
The battle cry among Padres fans has become a very familiar one over the years and is repeated every year And now over the next several days, it will be shouted all across the city.
“Beat L-A!” The battle cry that for years was what fans yelled when the Padres would play the Los Angeles Dodgers. And for years, it didn’t happen all that often. The Padres would lose to the Dodgers more than they beat them.
But things are different now. Two years ago, the Padres were in the playoffs and beat L-A to advance to the National League Championship Series. This year, the Padres won the season series against the Dodgers.
And this year, the desire among the players to beat L-A for the Padres late owner Peter Seidler, whose initials have been on their uniforms all season, is driving them to do what Seidler wanted very badly, to beat L-A and win a World Series.
Padres fans are certainly hoping that his dream and theirs comes true over the next few weeks as they battle to “Beat L-A” and win a championship!
