Why Padres May Have History on Their Side

As Padre fans await tonight’s fifth and deciding game against the Dodgers in the National League Division Series, it is worth remembering and knowing what happened 40 years ago this week.

It was 1984 and the Padres were playing the Chicago Cubs in what was then a best out of five games National League Championship Series. And most of the baseball pundits, after the Cubs blew out the Padres 13-0 in the first game and won the second game, would win the series.

Some fan might be thinking that the Dodgers blowing out the Padres this week in game # 4 by a score of 8-0 was a bad omen.

But something happened in 1984 that may be a past omen to remember today.

Former Los Angeles Dodger turned San Diego Padre Steve Garvey, who is now a politician and running for the U.S Senate from California, hit a home run in the 4th game of the series and the Padres won the 5th and deciding game and went to the World Series for the first time.

So going into tonight’s game, the Padres not only have a better team than they did 40 years ago, but they also have the history on their side when Steve Garvey was wearing Padre brown having said goodbye to Dodger blue.
