What Today Is and What Today Is Not

In case you haven’t noticed, today is a confusing day. It is October 14th and it’s a federal holiday but not a state holiday and in some states it’s a double holiday.

The federal government celebrates today as Columbus Day. Some kids still will recite what most kids recited for many years, “In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue?

And because it is a federal holiday, most federal offices including the postal service as well as most banks are closed today including California.

But California ended the observance of Columbus Day back in 2009.

Now California does observe Indigenous People’s Day but it is called Native American Day and is celebrated at the end of September not in October.

And it is not an official state holiday though and schools are open. But state workers can use the day as their personal day.

Indigenous Peoples Day is today in some states which recognizes the contributions of Native Americans,

President Biden in 2021 issued a proclamation recognizing the October day as Indigenous Peoples Day, but it is not a federal holiday, except for it already being a federal holiday because it is Columbus Day.

Maybe today should just be called “Confusing Day.”
