Expecting the Unexpected in San Diego

This week marks the one year anniversary of some of the worst flooding San Diego has ever seen.

It was on January 22 of 2024 that torrential rains came and never before seen urban flooding occurred in neighborhoods in the southeast part of the city.

Roads were flooded, creeks overflowed, cars were literally picked up by flooding rushing water and carried along and even some piled on one another.

Hundreds of people had to run for their lives as water flooded their homes to the ceiling at times and others were rescued by first responders who trudged and swam through the water. Dozens and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed, with many still not repaired or replaced a year later.

The one year anniversary of that very unusual weather that day in San Diego with all that rain that fell and led to all that flooding comes the same week that we are experiencing another round of unusual weather,

Unusually strong Santa Ana winds and at a time when we are in the driest rainy season ever recorded in San Diego with only about a tenth of an inch of  rainfall since October when the National Weather Service rainy season calendar begins.

When it comes to Mother Nature, maybe we should expect the unexpected, even in a place like San Diego that is said to have America’s finest weather.
