There were a lot people reacting to Wednesday’s crash of a Navy fighter jet into San Diego Bay with these words, “another plane crash?”
No surprise of course with the recent crashes in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Arizona.
Fortunately, the crash in San Diego this week turned out about as good as it could have.
The two pilots were able to safely eject from their F-18 class plane and are in good condition.
A fishing vessel was with Good Samaritans, as Harbor Police called them, who were able to pull the pilots out of the cold water within a minute or so.
And the jet fighter came down in an open area of the Bay, instead of possibly crashing onto land, on Shelter Island for instance, where people could have been killed.
Luck or divine providence or both played a role.
What likely also played a role were the skills of these highly trained Navy pilots who know what to do when an emergency happens.
And while we have had a few recent deadly crashes, aviation experts and pilots themselves are reminding is that flying is still the safest form of transportation, with hundreds of thousands of planes in the skies every week, and a miniscule number of mishaps.
