The Problem for an Affordable Housing Solution

Despite a recent report that the price of homes fell slightly in Southern California no one expects too much of a fall. What we do see happening is a lot of talk about more affordable housing. We hear it every week in San Diego. Calls for more affordable housing.

And we see and hear about more plans for more ADU’s or additional dwelling units on single family home properties.

But now there are those that are saying hold on a minute.

Among them a San Diego Union Tribune reader who wrote on the letters page that ADU’s are out of control.

The specific project that has drawn a lot of criticism lately is a project in a Clairemont neighborhood where 17 ADU’s are being built on property on a cul de sac in a single family neighborhood.

There have also been complaints from residents in North Park and other neighborhoods about the size and location of these ADU’s, and even arguments now between neighbors over what it means for the character of neighborhoods and when it comes to parking for instance.
