A Reminder From History About the Present

It may be just another listing on today’s list of historical events that happened on this day in history.

But it does remind us of a time when our country was deeply divided and when hateful things were said.

The day when civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr lost his life because of the actions of a man filled with hate.

The late 1960s, for many reasons, beyond what happened on that day in 1968 were times of conflict. The Vietnam War was raging, the streets and college campuses were filled with demonstrators, there was a of talk about social justice and the songs of the late 60’s reflected the times.

Fast forward to 2025 and our country is divided again, in different ways over different issues and important issues.

But the tenor of the talk about it all, just like it was back in the late 1960s, is too often filled with people saying hateful things about other people who are also saying hateful things about them.

These may be divided times, but we can still choose to be kinder to one another. Even if it’s hard it could be the only way things change.
