We are all familiar with the old adage about taking time to smell the roses. The advice to take some time to step away from the busyness, work and worries of life.
And now a new study is out that scientifically proves that getting out in nature and experiencing the smells of nature is not only good for relaxation but also makes people feel physically healthier with lower stress and cortisol levels which affect many health issues.
Smelling nature outdoors, the study says, also gives people a more overall positive feeling.
As one of the researchers puts it, “Nature is a multi-sensory experience and our study demonstrates the potential significance of smell for wellbeing.”
They say the smells of nature also often trigger pleasant memories of your past and your childhood that can make you feel better.
This study may be coming at just the right time when a lot of people are feeling stressed over politics and everything from high gas prices to falling stock prices and worries about the value of their 401K’s.
So it’s probably a good time to take some time to get outdoors and let the smells of nature make you feel better.
