It appears the unhappiness and even anger over having to now pay for parking when you go to Balboa Park is about to boil over.
An effort announced last month to push for a ballot measure that would repeal paid parking in the city’s “crown jewel” of a park is kicking off its drive this weekend to collect enough signatures so that voters can vote on it.
And from the reaction in these first few weeks of paying to park in Balboa Park, there are a lot of voters ready to vote.
Letters to the editor of the San Diego Union Tribune are coming from residents in the city and outside the city. And not only are some people are saying they are not going to Balboa Park as much because of having to pay, there are some who are saying when they have gone to pay, they’ve found the parking kiosks not working correctly.
As one letter writer from Encinitas put it, “The city is doing harm to itself and to Balboa Park with this kind of ineptitude.”
With this kind of negative reaction, and museums in Balboa Park having seen declines in visitors because of the paid parking, the repeal measure will probably make it onto the ballot.
And with it being an election year for seats on the San Diego City Council, voters could be the ones who decide the future of Balboa Park parking.
