As we reported to you on Monday, Waymo has been given the final permit, or the okay, from the California Public Utilities Commission to pick up passengers in San Diego.
The green light for Waymo means it can begin its autonomous passenger service in San Diego, that doesn’t mean there will won’t be a fight, that at least is a possibility, even if unlikely.
There has been formal opposition to the driverless taxi’s coming to San Diego.
The Metropolitan Transit System. MTS, objected to it. The CEO telling the PUC the autonomous vehicles could block streets or trolley tracks and disrupt transit service and would harm the local taxi industry and that local governments — not just the state — should have a say over Waymo is given a go in a certain community.
Ask people on the streets of San Diego and while there are those who are looking forward to it, there are at least as many who say that getting into a driverless Waymo vehicle is a no-go.
Despite a recent study that said driverless vehicles are statistically safer than humans driving vehicles, it’s still a hard sell to a lot of people.
And while there will be some who say yes, there will also be some who say no to Waymo.
