George Chamberlin: Father's Day Spending Set to Hit Record

This Sunday is the annual celebration of dear old dad.

While I am very lucky to have my wonderful daughter living nearby, my son lives near Seattle so I don’t get the chance to visit with him very often. However, we will spend the next week with our grandson. He is a marvelous 15-year-old who is on a great path to success in his life and I know he likes to get away from the northwest for his annual visit with his grandparents.

Of course, retailers like to seize the day by running special promotions on items the think would make a nice gift.

The National Retail Federation says Americans will spend $16 billion, breaking last years record of $15.3 billion. Of course, dads still lag substantially behind mothers where spending earlier this reached a record $25 billion. And they deserve every penny of it. Mom’s wear so many different hats it's no surprise that makes them tough to replace.

It doesn’t end with the kids. My battle with cancer, which continues, would have been impossible without the support of my wife and the mother of my children. Her management of my medications and treatments would have costs a fortune without her dedication.
