Salk Researchers Technique Helps Woman With Tremors

Scientists are expanding the use of sound to treat disorders.A researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies already has developed a method called sonogenetics.

It offers a non invasive surgery using low frequency sound to activate specific ultrasonically sensitized neurons.

Researchers are building on that and are developing more treatments.

Last April, a woman who enrolled in a trial in Ohio was treated with ultrasound to stop the tremor in her right hand.  The procedure used beams of sound energy to destroy abnormal neurons in the brain, no surgery needed. The tremor is now 85 percent gone.
