When to call 9-1-1 or head to the emergency room.
There are obvious times, such as major trauma, someone being unconscious, or major burns or broken bones.
Dr. Stephen Leibham, Medical Director of U-S Healthworks in San Diego, says if you are man in your 50's with high cholesterol and high blood pressure and are doing something strenuous and have chest pain, you should call 9-1-1.
If you're a relatively healthy woman with a family history of heart disease and high blood pressure, and feel chest pain and arm numbness, this too, would be a time to call 9-1-1.
There are many other conditions which cause chest pain that aren't related to the heart.

By the way, when you get to any emergency room, ask if they are in network provider. If you are transferred to the hospital itself, you need to ask again whether the doctors seeing you are in your network.
