Wafting fumes from resin being used by construction workers on a sewer-line project near a Bay Terraces primary school today left more than two dozen students at the campus feeling ill and sent one of them to a hospital with shortness of breath.
The children began reporting nausea and dizziness at Zamorano Elementary School shortly before 10:30 a.m., following a recess period, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
In all, 28 youngsters complained of adverse reactions to the vapors, which came from a substance used to line municipal sanitation pipelines to extend their longevity, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.
Medics took one of the stricken pupils to an emergency room for evaluation of respiratory distress. The rest were released to their parents, Munoz said.
