Several Brush Fires Break Out in San Diego Area

Local, state and federal firefighters were busy Sunday fighting small brush fires across the county from Otay Mesa to Fallbrook.

A fire near San Diego State that was first reported about 12:30 p.m. Sunday burned close to 3 acres. It broke out near the 8 freeway and College Avenue and forced the evacuation of the Villa Alvarado Apartments along Alvarado Road but there were no reports of damage.

The fire also forced MTS to miss several stops during the fire including it's College and Alvarado stop, College and SDSU stop and SDSU Transit Center stop. Traffic on the freeway was backed up for a while and at least one freeway ramp at I-8 and College Ave. was closed.

There was also a fire Sunday afternoon in the Fallbrook area that broke out about 2:30 p.m. along Rainbow Glenn Road and burned primarily in a grove according to Cal Fire. Structures were threatened for a time before firefighters stopped the forward spread of the flames.

Sunday morning, about 10 small spot fires broke out in the Otay Mesa area near the Otay River. The first report of a brush fire was from Beyer Way that came in at 10:30 a.m. Early Sunday afternoon, San Diego police took a suspect into custody in connection with the multiple brush fires set near the Otay River.near a homeless encampment in the 240 block of Beyer Way. Police say a man matching the description of the alleged arsonist given by witnesses was taken into custody by San Diego police officers.
