Woman Raising Money to Provide Tactical Gear to Ukrainian Soldiers

SAN DIEGO (KNSD) - A Ukrainian-American woman is raising a lot of money to help those on the front lines in Ukraine.

Nina Shapirshteyn came to the United State with her family in the 1990's after the fall of the Soviet Union. She's a graduate of UC San Diego and a practicing attorney. She tells NBC 7 she started a non-profit to raise money to buy and send tactical gear to Ukrainian soldiers and others who are fighting against the Russian invasion.

“The reality is that Ukrainians are still lacking very basic gear and we’re not providing weapons," Shapirshteyn said. "We are just providing things that people can wear. So helmets, bulletproof vests, range finders, night vision goggles."

In the past few weeks she's raised about $100,000 for the effort. Shapirshteyn says many of her friends who left like she did have since returned to fight against Russia.
