CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - A church in the South Bay finds itself on a mission to help Ukrainian refugees.
Calvary San Diego has opened its doors to Ukrainians who have escaped the Russian invasion of their homeland. Aaron Szloboda is the associate pastor and he tells reporting partner 10 News the church is currently helping about 200 Ukrainian refugees a day.
“We're probably handling at this point, about 85% to 90% of those who are crossing through the San Ysidro or Otay borders,” said Szloboda.
The church has set up a welcome booth at the border with a translator and they're offering many refugees a temporary place to stay until they get a flight or other means of transportation to family or friends they know in other parts of California and the rest of the U.S. The church is accepting donations of food and water and they are in need of some more drivers and short-term hosts.
More than 3.5 Million Ukrainians have left their homeland since Russia invaded, with most going to nearby countries like Poland.
