National City Proposing Drastic Increase in Cruising Permits

NATIONAL CITY - While cruising events have made a comeback after a 30 year absence in National City, a move by the city council could effectively shut them down again.

City leaders and the police department are now proposing the event sponsor, the United Lowrider Coalition, now pay nearly $8,000 for each of its upcoming events, well above the $372 the city and the group previously agreed to.

Police say they had a number of concerns after the first event which happened earlier this month, including traffic congestion, vehicle code violations and a need for more police resources. The United Lowrider Coalition says they don't have the funding available, and some on the city council say the original agreement should be honored for the remaining approved events.
