San Diego County’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality will be overseeing how to enforce new regulations on single-use plastics for restaurants and businesses.
A County spokesperson says the department will be in charge of all 19 local jurisdictions.
This comes after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1276 last year, which says retail food businesses must only give out plastic items like straws or utensils if a customer requests them.
Penalties for continued violations include fines of up to $300.
The department plans to “incorporate compliance checks” in its routine restaurant inspections.
