Is there such thing a "California" accent?
According to a linguistics professor at San Francisco State University who spoke to KRON-TV, everyone has an accent, but there are certain speech patterns that are specific to long-time California residents. Those patterns include "up-talking", which is ending a sentence with a higher tone, vocal fry, or "creaky voice", is another, along with over-use of the word "like."
But perhaps the most well noted speech pattern associated with "California English", specifically Southern California, is using the word "the" before freeway or highway names or numbers.
